OpenAI to Release First Open-Weight Model Since GPT-2, Report Says
OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch a new open-weight language model as early as next week. If confirmed, this will mark its first openly released model since GPT-2 in 2019. The model, possibly called “O3 Mini,” is expected to be available on platforms like Azure and Hugging Face, signaling a significant shift in OpenAI’s historically closed approach.

Sources from Reuters and The Verge report that the upcoming model will allow developers and researchers to inspect, run, and fine-tune it independently. That makes it a strategic counter to open-weight models from Meta, Mistral, and others that have gained traction in the enterprise and academic sectors. While OpenAI hasn’t commented publicly, insider leaks suggest the model is already being tested with select partners.
The move suggests OpenAI is repositioning itself in the AI tooling ecosystem. Open-weight models offer transparency and adaptability that enterprises and governments increasingly demand. By making the model available outside of ChatGPT, OpenAI could retain influence over developer workflows without locking them into proprietary platforms. This would also put pressure on cloud providers, including Azure, to accommodate more flexible, interoperable AI deployment pipelines.
