OpenAI releases Codex

OpenAI has launched Codex, a new AI-powered coding agent designed to assist developers by automating tasks such as writing code, fixing bugs, running tests, and answering codebase questions. Built on the codex-1 model, a specialized version of OpenAI’s o3 reasoning model optimized for software engineering, Codex operates within a secure, cloud-based environment.

Currently available to ChatGPT Pro, Team, and Enterprise users, with plans to expand access to Plus and Edu users, Codex represents a significant step in AI-assisted software development. OpenAI engineers are already utilizing Codex for repetitive tasks like code refactoring and testing, enhancing productivity and focus.

Unlike traditional chatbots, Codex can interact with other software and online services, potentially assisting with practical tasks beyond coding, such as placing food orders or making reservations.
