OpenAI Researcher Confirms GPT‑5 Is Nearing Release, IMO Gold-Level Math Model Kept Under Wraps

An OpenAI researcher has revealed that GPT‑5 will be released soon, while separately disclosing a research model that achieved gold-level performance at the 2025 International Math Olympiad. This advanced math model remains internal and will not be available publicly in the coming months. The announcement signals a deliberate separation between OpenAI’s research achievements and its next commercial product launch.

OpenAI's Alexander Wei has disclosed that an internal language model achieved gold-level performance at the 2025 International Math Olympiad. The model solved five out of six problems under official competition conditions, scoring 35 out of 42 points. Independent evaluation by three former IMO medalists confirmed the result, marking a significant milestone in long-form reasoning for AI.

The researcher clarified that this math-specialized model is not part of OpenAI’s upcoming GPT‑5 release. While GPT‑5 is scheduled to launch soon, it will not include the advanced mathematical reasoning capabilities demonstrated in the IMO benchmark. The researcher noted there are no immediate plans to release this high-reasoning model to the public, with a timeline extending several months at minimum.

This separation reflects OpenAI’s current approach of advancing specialized reasoning models within internal research programs while keeping its general-purpose AI products on a separate track. For AI practitioners and enterprises, it highlights the widening gap between cutting-edge reasoning research and the AI models available for public use.
