OpenAI has launched “Study Mode” in ChatGPT, a new feature designed to support step-by-step learning rather than direct answer delivery. Rolled out on July 29, Study Mode is now live for all logged-in users across Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. OpenAI plans to bring it to ChatGPT Edu in the coming weeks. The feature uses Socratic questioning, follow-up prompts, and interactive hints to guide users through learning material instead of handing out instant solutions.

Study Mode was developed in consultation with nearly 40 educational institutions and pedagogy experts. The intent is clear: turn ChatGPT into a learning companion that fosters critical thinking and reduces academic misuse. This launch marks a strategic move for OpenAI to differentiate ChatGPT in educational settings, especially as Google’s Gemini and other models face criticism for bypassing active learning principles.

While this first version runs on specialized system instructions, OpenAI says it plans to integrate these behaviors directly into future core models. This shift could make active-learning tools native to AI platforms. Additionally, OpenAI is working with education tech firms in India and the U.S. to extend Study Mode via API, signaling a broader play into the edtech integration market.
